Let's Cycle Across the Golden Gate Bridge She Says....

Our second day in San Fran gave us the genius idea of cycling across the Golden Gate Bridge. So we set off to Fisherman's Wharf and got on the 'light rail' and then the bus. But the sights we saw on the way were...erm...eye opening?!? We got off the light rail and had to walk by Union Square to catch the bus and there was a homeless man 'relieving his bowels' in a cool box!!!! Oh yes, you heard me correctly! Then there was another homeless man 'relieving his bladder' in a cup and chucking it in the bin!! Both of those were definitely a first for us!! But we made it to the Wharf in one piece and hired bikes with our friend Leah and went a-cycling. Now, we'd been told there were 'a few hills' en route to the bridge but didn't quite realise there was one so early on! As you can see from the pic of Leah above, we had to give ourselves a bit of a push start before we could really get going! So up and down we went and along the seafront and by the marina which was just beautiful. When we got near to the bridge we stopped for some photo opps (I love the one of Paige above by the bridge - this one is especially for her Dad as he's a keen cyclist and would be so proud of what she achieved) and then we faced the MASSIVE hill that was Long Avenue. Paige made it the entire way without stopping, how she did I don't know, but I had a few stop/starts going on! Once we got to the bridge and cycled across it was just incredible. The view was breath taking and the weather was gorgeous (so much so that I got a great 'go faster' tan line on one arm!). We eventually made it to Sausalito after about two hours and we had tx Alexis (Paige's awesome cousin that we're staying with) before we went over the bridge to tell us what we were doing and she said she might meet us over in Sausalito on her bike and we were like 'yeah right'! But low and behold, we just sat down for lunch after our mammoth trek and she tx to say she was there!! And she'd cycled the entire way from her apartment waaaayyyyy up on the hill! She really is wonder woman and put us all to shame! Then she cycled the whole way back to hers in an hour while it took Paige and I nearly 3 hours to get back via ferry, bus and light train!! But we'd never have made it back on a bike that's for sure! We got some great views of Alcatraz on the ferry too as we're not able to go there this trip as it's all booked up until 7th July!!! Annoying but I guess it's just one of those things. Such a sense of achievement when we got home though. Would recommend the experience to everyone!
